Greenback

Members of the Legislature: 1
Highest Office Won: State Legislature
Founded: 1874 in Indianapolis, IN.

The Greenback Party (also known as the Greenback-Labor Party and the Greenbackers) was founded with the goal of promoting the use of paper money as regular currency. In 1880, the platform expanded to include a ban on prison labor, legislation to break up monopolies, and the exclusion of Chinese immigrants. In 1888, the Greenback party merged with the Union Labor Party, and with the Populist Party in 1892. Nationally, between 1874 and 1888, eleven Greenbacks were elected to Congress (all were members of the House).

NOTE: Greenbacks were sometimes known as Independent Party. Independents have been recatagorized as nonpartisan.
