During the elections between 1862 and 1868, the Republican Party ran candidates using the name "Union Party." The Republican Party candidates ran under the banner of the Union Party in the 1862 Election for Superintendent of Public Instruction, the 1863 & 1867 Gubernatorial, and the 1864 & 1868 Presidential elections. In 1867, a rival faction of the party that was opposed to the re-nomination of President Andrew Johnson, the Union Republican Party, ran opposing candidates for four statewide offices.
