Founded: 1833 in Washington, DC.

First formed to oppose the policies of President Andrew Jackson, the Whig party was strongly in favor of limiting the executive power of the President. In 1851, the Whigs were the majority party in the Assembly. A year later, in 1852, former President Millard Fillmore ran for a second term as a Whig party candidate. Slavery divided party right as California received statehood.

Since 2008, a party identified as the "New Whig Party" has been attempting to qualify for the ballot in California. As of February 2011, the party has 151 registered voters.
