- CLOSE CALL: On December 4, 1920, Assemblyman Stevens attended a party thrown by Sonoma County Sheriff Jim Petray. At the party, Sheriff Petray offered Stevens an appointment as an honorary Deputy Sheriff, which Stevens accepted. The following afternoon, Petray saw Stevens as he was preparing to arrest some suspects, saying "Here, you're a deuty now. Get in my car and come along with me. We're going after some suspects." Stevens explained that wasn't able to join the Sheriff as he had an appointment in San Francisco. "Oh well," said Petray, "I guess we can get along all right." Sheriff Petray, along with San Francisco Police detectives Miles Jackson and Lester Dorman, were killed by George Boyd, one of the suspects they were arying to arrest.
