  • In June 2012, McPherson changed his party affiliation from Republican to 'Decline to State'.
  • As Secretary of State in 2005, McPherson discontinued the printing of the California State Roster, which had been been published by the office since 1881. The publication is still compiled, but is "made available exclusively online" at the SOS website
  • McPherson was an employee of the Santa Cruz Sentinel newspaper for 26 years including Editor for nine years, editorial writer for ten, City Editor for eight years, a government reporter for six years, and sports editor for two years. 
  • Hunter McPherson was murdered by Clifton Terrell Jr. during an attempted robbery of Hunter and his girlfriend, Alexa Savelle, in San Francisco on November 17, 2001. In 2005, Terrell was convicted of  first-degree murder and robbery and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. 
  • During his confirmation hearing before the State Senate, McPherson explained that his father was the inspiration for his political career; "My newspaper publisher father, Fred McPherson Jr., who ran for Assembly in 1932 and lost by 400 votes, told me, as his father told him, that we are very fortunate to be in the position we are in, but that in itself is not good enough. We must participate in our community, we must give back, we must make it better than we found it." - McPherson's opening statement to the State Senate during his confirmation
