1910s: Chairman, Federal District Draft Board in California (World War I)

  • "Dean of the California Legislature" in 1946
  • DISABILITY: Was not present at the 1919 Special Session due to a serious eye "affection" which precluded him from attending. An obituary (in 1947) noted that "For the past 30 years Senator Slater had been totally blind." 
  • FATHER OF THE CODE: Slater authored SB 68 (1933), which established the California Agriculture Code and SB 923 (1943) which established the California Education Code. The Agriculture Code was renamed the Food and Agriculture Code in 1972.
