  • In 1982, Packard lost the nomination by just under 100 votes out of 69,000 votes cast in the Republican Primary.
  • Packard won the 1982 General Election as a write-in candidate, becoming only the 4th person in the history to be elected to Congress as a write-in. Only five California candidates have won a partisan office as a write-in candidate, and Packard was the most recent. Before Packard, the last winning write-in candidate was George A. Wilson in 1958. 
  • PLACENAME: State Route 78 is officially named the "Ronald Packard Parkway". He was the primary person responsible for the improvements made to the State Highway Routes 76 and 78. - Source:
