2007: Primary Candidate for CD-37 Special Election (Lost; 31.3%)
2010: Majority Caucus Chair, California State Senate

  • LEGISLATIVE HISTORY: Oropeza was the first female State Senator to die in office. Only one female legislator had died in office previously, Assemblymember Dorothy M. Donahoe in 1960.
  • Posthumous Victory: Oropeza was reelected to the State Senate in the 2010 General Election two weeks after she died in office.
  • PLACENAME: The Jenny Oropeza Global Studies Academy is located at the Rancho Dominguez Preparatory School in Long Beach (it was named in 2011). The Jenny Oropeza Community Center is located in Long Beach. SCR 79 (2012) by Senator Lieu designated a section of Highway 1 in Los Angeles County as the "Honorable Jenny Oropeza Memorial Overcrossing". SCR 115 (Res Chapt 130, Stats of 2014) by Senator Lara designates a section of State Route 710 in Long Beach as the "as the Senator Jenny Oropeza Memorial Freeway."
