1856: Chairman, San Francisco's Committee on Vigilance
1876-1877: President, Society of California Pioneers

  • Minerals: Colemanite (a borate mineral formed through the combination of borax and ulexite) was named after Coleman. Coleman was the owner of the Harmony Borax Works mine at which it was first discovered.
  • Regard his tenure as head of the Committee on Vigilance; "With some personal reluctance he accepted the office of president, which made him virtually complete dictator... His undaunted courage, his high ability in generalship, his absolute honesty and sound, balanced judgement, and withal his deep devotion to public duty single him out as one of the truly great pioneer leaders of California."
