Candidate Biography:
Carl David DeMaio
Born: September 14, 1974 in Dubuque, Iowa
Married: Jonathan Hale
1994-1999: Director of Planning, Congressional Institute
2008-2012: Member, San Diego City Council
2012: Candidate for Mayor of San Diego (Lost; 47.5%)
2018: Early Primary Candidate for CD-50 (Withdrew) [see below]
2020: Primary Candidate for CD-50 (Lost; 20.4%)
- 2018 Election: DeMaio pulled nomination documents (the first step in becoming a candidate) on March 5th but announced on March 9th that he would not be running, noting that his work in California would be "much more important."
- TERMINOLOGY: DeMaio uses the term "State Representative" rather than "State Assembly Member" more than any other legislation that I'm aware of. He uses it in the banner image of his official website, in his Twitter/X biography, and it's even sewed onto his Assembly jacket.
