- Taliaferro was a member of the filibuster party (led by Henry A. Crabb) that attempted to split off part of northern Mexico into a separate "Republic of Sonora", but was not present for the Battle of Cavores. The battle continued for eight days, at the end of which Crabb surrendered with 58 men. Crabb and five other former California legislators were executed by firing squad the next day.
