1840s: Assisstant Surveyor on the boundary between the United States and Mexico
1854-1855: Railroad construction engineer, Sacramento Valley Railroad Company
1855-1871: Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Army

Whiting was the only appointed Surveyor General; all of his successors were elected to office.
