Candidate Biography:

Born: 1822 in Mississippi
Died: August 26, 1880 in Stockton, CA

1857: Resigned from the State Senate on November 6.

  • According to Calaveras Gold, Norman and Robert Newton Clyde brought a slave named Edmington Binum from Mississippi to California in the 1850s. Pamela Martin (a can-find-anything rockstar at the California State Library) found that Binum purchased his own freedom from Senator Norman for $1400 and then sent for his family to join him in Calaveras County.
