Special Election to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of State Senator John H. Harper (SD-22).

  • The 2000 California Blue Book (p. 228) indicates that this was a contested election and Harper was unseated on February 27, 1853 because Denver was found to have won the recent election. Alternatively, Bancroft's "California, 1884-1890" states that "John H. Baird, who resigned in March, when J. W. Denver was elected to fill his place;"
