Liberal Republican

Members of the Legislature: None
Highest Office Won: Congress (1872)
Founded: 1872 in Cincinatti, OH.

A branch of the Republican Party that included a number of members from the Democratic Party, the Liberal Republican Party split with the Republicans over their dissatisfaction with President Grant. In the 1872 Presidential election, the Democratic party endorsed the Liberal Republicans, and no Democrats appeared on the ballot. Although Grant won in California, the Liberal Republicans did win 66 electoral votes nationwide. After Grant was reelected in the 1872 election, the party dissolved and its members rejoined the two major parties.
