James L. Barker
Born: October 19, 1846 in Methuen, Massachusetts
Died: November 7, 1924 in the Pacific Ocean

  • Mid-Ocean: Barker died in the mid-Pacific (30 50'N 176 00'E) aboard the USS President Garfield. His body was embalmed and stored in Kobe, Japan until November 25th, when it was transported home on the USS President Lincoln. Barker traveled approximately 8,200 miles after death; 2,400 miles onward to Kobe, 5,400 miles back to San Francisco, and then 355 miles down to Santa Barbara.
