- In 1850, Motgomery served as attorney for Charles L. Robinson in the trial for Sacramento Mayor Hardin Bigelow's murder during the Squatter's Riot .
- In 1890, Montgomery served as attorney for San Joaquin County Sheriff Cunningham in the U.S. Supreme Court case "In re David Neagle" related to Neagle's killing of David S. Terry in defense of Stephen J. Field.
- HISTORIC: Montgomery's son John Joseph is thought by some historians to have conducted the first controlled flights of a heavier-than-air flying machine in America.
