  • OUCH: On April 4, 1917, Attorney Elias Cosper was murdered while representing local business owner W. D. Wiley in a lawsuit against farmer L. H. Denny. At a meeting in Cosper's law office, Denny drew a revolver and shot and killed Cosper and Wiley. When the shooting began, Denny used his attorney, John Covert, as a human shield. Denny then walked into the Hanford courthouse and killed Justice of the Peace George L. Meadows before he in turn was shot and killed by Hanford City Marshal W. J. Hime as he prepared to flee the scene.
