  • PLACENAME: Fort Rosecrans (in San Diego County) is named for General Rosecrans. Its construction began in 1873 and it was later transferred to the Navy in 1959. The base was redesignated "Naval Submarine Base San Diego" in 1981 and "Naval Base Point Loma" in 1998.
