PLACENAME: The town of Waterman Junction (constructed by Waterman around 1881) was renamed Barstow in 1886. However, the Waterman Hills (just north of Barstow) still retain the name. Shortly after the railroads renamed the town, Waterman complained to then-Governor Henry H. Markham, who declined to intervene.

PLACENAME: Waterman Canyon in San Bernardino County is named for Waterman.
