1953-1958: Member, San Francisco County Board of Supervisors

  • LEGISLATION: Senate Co-Author of AB 7 (1959) which ended the California prohibition on interracial marriage (Edward E. Elliott was the Author). (Ch. 146, Statutes of 1959) 
  • LEGISLATION: The McAteer-Petris Act (1965) created the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission and regulates the filling of San Francisco Bay. 
  • PLACENAME: J. Eugene McAteer High School was located in San Francisco until 2002, when it was dissolved. It's physical location was home to the Academy of Arts & Sciences (2002-2010) and currently the Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts (2010-Present).
