Died (in office): December 19, 1939 in San Bernardino, CA

  • Senator McColl was injured in a car crash in the Cajon Pass on December 18, 1939. McColl had been driving to Nevada to meet with Congressman James Scrugham. He was taken to the San Bernardino County Hospital for a head injury. He reported "a terrific headache" but doctors told reporters that the injury was not serious. He died the next day.
  • Senate President pro Tem W. P. Rich was injured, with his neck broken, when his vehicle overturned while returning to Sacramento from the funeral for John B. McColl. Senator Thomas McCormack was also badly injured in the crash.
