Esto Bates Broughton
Born: January 9, 1890 in Modesto, CA
Died: November 20, 1956 in California

1932: Delegate, Democratic National Convention
1944: Primary Candidate for CD-09 (Lost)

  • First Democratic Party woman elected to the legislature (1918)
  • Broughton graduated from the Modesto Public Schools and obtained a Bachelor's Degree from the State University in Stanislaus County. In 1916 Broughton began to practice law in Modesto, and continued working in law after she was in the State Assembly.
  • RECORD-HOLDER: Broughton was the youngest woman ever to serve in the Calfornia State Legislature (sworn in at 28 years, 11 months, 29 days) from the time of her inauguration (1919) until 2002, when Cindy Montanez was sworn in at age 28 years, 10 months, 14 days.
  • NOTE: One of the first women to serve in the Assembly in 1919.
  • As of the 1931 Legislative Session, Broughton was the reporter for the Fresno Republican, Stockton Record and San Francisco News covering the State Capitol.
