Horace Jeremiah Voorhis
Born: April 6, 1901 in Ottawa, Kansas
Died: September 11, 1984 in Claremont, CA

1928-1938: Headmaster and Trustee, Voorhis School for Boys
1930-1935: Lecturer, Pomona College
1934: Candidate for the State Assembly (Lost)
1939-1943: Member, House Un-American Activities Committee
1947-1967: Executive Director, Cooperative League of the United States of America

  • PLACENAME: Voorhis Park at Cal Poly Pomona is named for Voorhis, as is Voorhis Elementary School in El Monte.
  • QUOTEABLE: "We are home for the campaign. We have to be. Congressmen either campaign every two years or they don't remain congressmen. Sometimes they don't anyways." (Confessions of a Congressman)
  • PUBLISHED AUTHOR: Voorhis wrote Confessions of a Congressman, published by Doubleday in 1947.
  • In 1927, Voorhis founded and served as the headmaster for the Voorhis School for Boys. The school closed in 1938 and the campus became the Cal Poly Voorhis Unit (now CalPoly Pomona).
